We hope that you find this site helpful in providing information regarding the purpose of the TIGA and how it protects Tennessee policyholders and claimants in the event of a property and casualty insurance company insolvency. TIGA was created in 1971. Our mission is to provide a safety-net on specific statutorily defined claims and claims for unearned premiums, for Tennessee companies and residents who purchase insurance from an insurance company licensed in the state of Tennessee.TIGA is managed on a day-to-day basis by an Executive Secretary who reports to a five person board of directors.

These representations of the statute are for general information purposes only. For legal purposes you should see the Tennessee Code Annotated and Public Acts. Statutes may be amended yearly and an attorney should be consulted to determine you have an up-to-date code. TIGA is not responsible for errors or changes in the law not represented herein.
A "bar date" is the last date a claimant may file a claim with an insolvent insurance company. After that date the claimant is "barred" from filing further claims. An "insolvency date" is the date the court order of insolvency was signed. Residents of Tennessee (at date of loss) seeking information may contact the numbers below with regard to claims handled by Tennessee Insurance Guaranty Association.
Plaintiff Counsel: T.C.A. §56-12-117 provides for a stay of litigation, but TIGA may choose not to seek such a stay if it can confirm coverage and get access to claim files. Please contact TIGA to discuss or if you have a hardship case. Defense Counsel of insolvent insurance companies: Fees and expenses incurred prior to insolvency are not obligations of TIGA, but counsel should make claim upon the liquidator for those amounts. No fees and expenses will be paid by TIGA unless expressly authorized by TIGA.
Liquidators may require their own detailed Proof of Claim form for claims to be processed after insolvency. Liquidators may require Proof of Claim ("POC") filing by a certain date (also known as a "bar" date), after which claims are not accepted. Liquidator POC forms are to be returned to the Liquidator, not to TIGA.
