Because the East Coast insurance companies did not understand Midwest perils and risk, a group of rural Pottawattamie County farmers in Hazel Dell Township founded their own insurance company in 1876 under the name Pottawattamie County Farmer's Mutual Insurance Association. The name later changed to Pottawattamie Mutual Insurance Association, and again in 1998 to its current name, Western Iowa Mutual Insurance Association. In 1993, Western Iowa Mutual was a 518 county mutual that was able to write only in six counties: Pottawattamie, Mills, Montgomery, Cass, Shelby, and Harrison.
Services
Western Iowa Mutual offers insurance for homeowners and farm owners along with inland marine, through selected independent insurance agents located in southern, southwestern, and central Iowa. We have two liability carriers that can attach liability coverage to our policy: IMT, based in Des Moines, Iowa, and 1st Auto & Casualty, based in Madison, Wisconsin. To contact one of our local independent agents use the agent locator section of our website or call us at (800) 921-1823.
In the event of a loss, no matter how large or small, please notify your insurance agent as soon as possible. If the claim is an emergency (fire, water, tornado, high winds) over a weekend or holiday, try to contact both your agent and Western Iowa Mutual. Please be ready to provide your policy number, the date and time the loss occurred, the type of loss, a description of the loss/damage, and the location of the loss. That depends on what coverages are included in your policy, the cause of damage, and what property was damaged.
Rich in history, our Insurance Company got its start back in 1876. Since the beginning, our mission has been to provide quality, affordable insurance to farm and home owners. We are proud to be represented by one hundred independent agents writing policies in thirty agencies throughout the territory.
