Bermuda is referred to as the "world's risk capital, " a nod to the innovation, entrepreneurialism and leadership of Bermuda insurers and the Bermuda government that has fostered the growth of this business. More than 40 years ago, the country emerged as the leader in the development and regulation of captive insurers; today it is the home of underwriting operations for more than 30 major international insurance and reinsurance firms.
Reinsurance is critical to risk management in the property and casualty insurance industry. To provide consumers and businesses with more insurance at lower prices, ABIR advocates for a robust insurance market open to as many competitors as possible. Global reinsurers are financially strong and have substantial capacity to support insurance companies in the wake of disaster.
ABIR looks for opportunities to educate students, future employees, policymakers and others about our industry and the contributions that insurance and reinsurance make to both the local and global economy. In 2020, ABIR partnered with Bermuda College and St. John's University, Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance & Actuarial Science to develop diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives to recruit the next generation of re/insurance leaders in Bermuda.A foundational re/insurance course at Bermuda College underwritten by ABIR.
