Mutual insurance in America, as we have come to know it, really began in London, England, in 1696 with the formation of Contributors for Insuring Houses, Chambers, or Rooms from Loss by Fire by Amicable Contributionship. For obvious reasons it became more commonly known as the Amicable Contributionship and ultimately as the Hand-in-Hand, a reference to the organization's fire mark, one hand clasping another hand, reflecting aid and assistance. Like so many other ideas of its time, travelers from England to the colonies brought stories and accounts of various insurance plans and schemes.
I use Mutual Assurance for the service line pipes between my 1961 home and the main lines; I pay $35.20/YEAR. It was $44 the first year. Any other insurer is a rip-off. Their (home) coverage is the least as well. I paid $1546 my first year, after which it dropped to 22% of that or $346/YEAR. YEAR is in all caps so you know that I'm not putting in year accidentally rather than month.

I have been a member of Mutual Assurance for over 10 years and can't believe everyone in Virginia isn't insuring his home with this company. Yes, the first year premium is steeper than with other companies, but I calculate I've saved over $8,000 in the years following. I plan to stick with them for as long as I live in Virginia, and bet my savings will reach $10,000 soon, and just keep going up from there. Great service too. I've only had one claim and the company was terrific. I love Mutual Assurance!

Our recent claim of property loss due to water damage while our house was on the market was handled professionally and quickly by Mutual Assurance. We've had a homeowners policy with this company for fourteen years and have been more than satisfied with the economical rates and excellent service! I can't tell how horrible their claims process is! I am at 90+ days waiting for the "outsourced" claims adjuster gets my "water damaged" kitchen construction started. Not one hammer has been lifted or a nail been ordered. Several calls to adjuster & home office go unreturned. It's a very lonely place when you have a an estimated $20K kitchen loss & no one works with you. Comunication is absent.
I complained to State Insurance Commission, which has not made a difference to anyone, except me. I would highly recommend going elsewhere for your P & C insurance needs. Tomorrow I'm emailing the CEO to see if he/she cares enough to retain a customer or educate them on what needs to happen; otherwise, I'm going to the BBB & local media.
